Hypnotising Or What?

In "Brave New World" hypnopaedia was used, a type of sleep teaching. The phrases that were taught often had a rhythmic tone. Obviously, so that the phrases taught could be remembered with no problem. There is a phrase used by Lenina "A gramme is always better than a damn."(90), this phrase is quite catchy. This technique of a rhythmic or catchy tone is used by advertisement and companies. For example, McDonald's with their "Para pa pa pa, I'm Lovin' It" song. Or even songs on the radio that get stuck in our head that we later end up looking up the name of because we begin to like the song and later buy the album. Could we be victims of a type of hypnotism? Have companies and artists found a way into our heads for the sake of their money?

  1. Some do believe that hypnosis works, some do not. The Mcdonalds songs are jingles, in which they purpose to this in order to sell. They get stuck in your head so we repeat it, then forgetting it or it can remind you of an item sold there making you go there and buy. I don't actually believe we are hypnotised in buying things we actually do not need. They simply get it in our heads making us WANT things. They want us to spend our money on useless things, then acutallly benefitting their money. Perhaps they don't care about us and only the money we have left. We desire things, it is in our human nature, this also causes jealousy. Without these desires then we do not have jealousy, without jealousy we only have happiness, anger, and sadness left. Our little "friends" soma can helps us wash away those nasty negative-emotions.

  2. Lenina recites this to calm herself from the idea of having only one man for three long months. In the World State, promiscuity is encouraged, so her actions are quite startling for her and her friend. Soma is used to forget about any other emotion and to stabilize yourself, whcih is what the verse is about. Take a gramme and stay happy. What big companies use is a tune to take your money. It's entertaining and fun to hear a little song instead of just a spoken word. This is used to catch your ears and make you want to go buy the company's products. So, even though you find yourself reciting this jingles, they are not used as hypnopaedia.

  3. Of course they find a way to get their product into our heads. It may not be hypnosis, but it is still effective. Catchy slogans (such as "a gramme is better than a damn") are much easier to remember. If we remember their products slogan, then we are more likely to remember their product, and therefore buy it.
