How do you know what is the truth? Is it an opinion or a fact?
In Huxley's world, it was what you were conditioned to believe. All contradicting truths were eliminated in favor of stability. Your truth was what they told you, what you learned in your sleep, what you knew from your environment. What is your truth now? Is it what you believe? If it is true to you, is it true to another as well?
All these thoughts were planted in my mind by the time I finished Brave New World. How do we know what is a lie? Bernard knew that conditioning exercises were all that the masses would know, but he also knew that there was other information beside it. The masses believed that entertainment was all they needed to know; that thinking for themselves was overrated. In reality, how were they to advance and evolve with this truth that others had woven for them?
Do the little truths that we know equal a bigger truth or is the real truth lost because of censorship, white lies, and machinations of another kind?

Reading Brave New World, I have also begun to think about truth. The only truth that can be believed to be true for all is that which can be proven. In other words, the only truths we know for sure, are facts. Otherwise, the things we believe are truths, may not really be. In the book, their truth was that which was given to them, as you said. However, many of our truths are also those that are given to us by our media. We believe they are true but maybe they're not true for everyone.
ReplyDeleteHow do we know what the truth really is? We believe in what other people tell us and for the most part don't find out for ourselves. Bernard in Brave New World was a seeker in finding out truth and to keep stability in this utopia this was not allowed. This type of restriction enables people to not have freedom. Freedom is essential in being able to find truth.
ReplyDeleteThere are many truths in this world. There are kinds that are believed by the masses or by a person. There are truths that have been left untold. Truths that been forced to accept by the people. Truth is just around the corner waiting to be found by us. But in the Brave New World, the truth has been mostly covered by white lies. Of course the managers can't fully lie to the citizens of the utopia. In their minds they were doing what is just and what is true. In others such as John the Savage, he thinks that the utopia is all lies. In the end we really don't know what is true and what is false. Since others believes they are doing what is just and others thinks its wrong.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes wonder about truth. I think facts are true until they are disproved. For example, (hypothetical, sorta) people use to think the Earth was the center of the galaxy. It was considered truth, until it was discovered we revolve around the sun.
