Has anyone ever noticed the confidence people can gain by commanding others? There's a quote in Brave New World I found interesting.
This quote took place when John the Savage went to the hospital to visit his ill mother and during his visit children were moking Linda's appearence. Because he was frustrated by the children's remarks, John began getting hostile towards the nurse making her feel intimidated.
"Run along now and have your cup of caffeine solutin, dear," she said to the other nurse. The exercise of authority restored her confidence, made her feel better. Now children!" she called. " (138)
She was not embarrassed anymore after using her superiority over the other nurse and the children. This reminds me of the movie Changeling (with Angelina Jolie). The Los Angeles Police Department was not willing to admit their mistake, instead tried to cover it up, and abused their superiority against others. They were valuing their pride too much, causing others to get hurt. I'm sure most people have been on both ends of this situation. Why is it that people feel this way by making others feel inferior?

I've heard that people feel that way after making others feel inferior only because that person usually has low selh esteem, and has to do that to make themselves feel superior. I watched Changeling, and not only did the police cause others to get hurt, but also almost let that psycho murderer get away.
ReplyDeleteWell I believe that a lot of people thrive on power, like climbing to get a better spot in the office like top chief editor of a news room. Being in that top spot gives you the power to command others, and superiority. We all seem to strive for it, to have the top grade in the class, to be the star of the team. It's just a definite way to gain self esteem which is what the world seems to be lacking now and when they do have self esteem they are usually lonely due to their behavior.
ReplyDeleteEven in the old days, people want the taste of power over the others. That is why countries waged wars to see who is superior than the other. But the authority over the others isn't just a game. Hard work and sacrifice can give you the opportunity to hold it. Holding the superiority over the others needs leadership, without it, the mind of the wielder is slowly or instantly succumbed to corruption. In their mind about power maybe its like this, "the strong *blank* the weak," (put anything you want the the blank.)
