Bernard's Ironic Predicament

As I was reading Brave New World, I noticed Bernard's discomfiture and unease when he was around others whether it be alpha, beta, delta, epsilon, or + and -. Chapter 3 pg. 52, "Bernard hated them, hated them. But they were two, they were large, they were strong. Chapter 4 pg. 68, "Bernard gave his orders in the sharp, rather arrogant and even offensive tone of one who does not feel himself too secure in his superiority...Hence the laughter of the women to whom he made proposals, the practical joking of his equals among the men. The mockery made him feel an outsider." Given these 2 passages, it is easy to see how Bernard does not conform and is an individual even among his own caste. Not only is he physically different from the other Alphas, but he also thinks differently. His outlook along with Helmholtz's is not the same as everyone else's and he exhibits his "different" behavior when he disapproves of the way Foster and the Assistant Predestinator talk about Lenina as a piece of meat. By abstaining from indulging in the soma too often to being uncomfortable with the common phrases like "one cubic centrimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments," Bernard feels he is separate and in some cases inferior. The ironic part of his predicament is that his apartness from others also clearly marks him as having the ability to be above all of them. From the positions of Director and down, they all are taught to be non-thinkers and to follow the norm of that time. In the ten World Controller's positions, they supervise the entire operation, but are allowed to engage in forbidden arts like reading the Bible. Thinkers and individuals like Bernard are sent to islands where they meet others of the same ilk. Here they have the chance to rise to the position of World Controllership after choosing to abandon the dangerous paths that could lead to instability. Bernard in this scenario should not feel subordinate to others because of his differences since it is because of this that if utilized would give him a chance at being a World Controller, the highest attainment for anyone in Brave New World
