When going back and looking at the first chapter of Brave New World I noticed a few things. The first was how Mr. Foster talks about statistics with students and he mentions how he is competing with other countries to see who can produce the most humans from one ovary. He explains how Singapore was able to squeeze out 16,500 humans from one ovary and was a record score.
That brought up a few questions to my mind such as: Do the controllers and hatcheries act as if the creation of life is just a simple game to see who can create the most?, If these humans are created with special genes where they can stay looking young and they are healthier do they live longer?, and if they do and just one country was able to produce 16,500 humans from one ovary what is the world's population like during that time?, and if 16,500 people were all created from the same ovary would that not make them look alike or have the same genes which makes me wonder are they all clones?
I would think that with the better genes they would live longer and look very similar if not clones. And with thousands of humans being produced at a time population growth would be on a rise instead of dropping which would mean with all these people being created the population might be a problem. But what does everyone else think?

I don't think the world controllers were trying to see if it was a game. They were just testing to see how many humans they could create. I'm sure the healthier these humans are, the longer they would live. As long as there aren't any outside factors such as accidents, and there rarely any in Huxley's utopia. Surely if the humans have the same genes they will look alike. And to answer your last question, I'm sure they knew on how many humans they could create before overpopulation would start.
ReplyDeleteAs they go on through the book Huxley gives a reason for why the population hasn't gone over, it's because they kill people off on their own. They've excluded nature from absolutely everything. And yes, a lot of them are clones because that's what they're aiming for, so I think. It sounds to me that they are trying to make the picture perfect people every time and each caste has it's different look. Their goal is to have perfection but even in a utopia, perfection is something that is out of reach.
