In Brave New World Bernard Marx is considered an outcast to the Alphas due to his smaller body frame and personality. He is not able to get as many girls as other Alphas can without doubt and hesitation. The lives of the Alphas, Betas, Gammas, and Epsilons revolve around each other. They are never allowed to think for themselves, yet Bernard Marx may feel the opposite.
Chapter 5 Part 2: Bernard Marx is attending a meeting of "twelve" people. The arrangement of the seats is boy, girl, boy, girl... when this was stated, The Last Supper of Jesus and his twelve disciples quickly popped into my head. Then " soma was passed from hand to hand..." and I thought of when Jesus was passing the bread and wine around the table for each of the disciples to eat and drink. From this scene, I feel as if Bernard Marx is the Judas of the meeting. Judas in the Last Supper deceived Jesus and turned him in to be crucified and before he did, Jesus announced that someone was going to deceive him, yet no one knew. With that, I see Bernard Marx as Judas because he is not like the others and he feels many unusual things that an Alpha should not feel. With that, he may one day turn his back on his caste and rebel.
Do you think this is possible that Bernard Marx may rebel and change all the lives of their world?

It's certainly possible but Bernard doesn't have enough initiative to rebel. He always WANTS to do something but he never does it. I don't believe it's possible to change the lives of people who have been genetically altered and brainwashed since before they were even born to not rebel or think differently.
ReplyDeleteIf you continue reading, you will find that Bernard doesn't actually start a rebellion. Although he wants to do something to change the world in which he lives, I agree with what Grace said: he does NOT have the initiative nor the strength to start one. I, however,disagree that the people of brave new world cannot change. I believe that if people open their minds, they can do anything and withstand all that block their path. If you think about it, all of us have been "brainwashed" at a very young age. An example would be our parents telling us about a god/certain religion or sharing their beliefs and the virtues they live by. All of these are part of the reason we think as we do.
ReplyDeleteBernard will never start a crazy rebellion simply because he enjoys his life. While he will trash talk his world up and down, he truly enjoys the ability to have sex with any girl whenever he wants. He loves being able to go to the feelies and all of those other amenities that the people in Brave New World had traded for them in exchange for true freedom. He loves that he can talk to Helmholtz and whine endlessly about the injustice of it all but he also loves that he can leave his friend’s house and call over any number of girls, especially in the weeks directly following bringing John home with him.
