In chapter 2 of Brave New World,The Director explains that they put the newborns through tests to make them hate things that we consider good, such as flowers and books. I find this a little odd. I am not judging their society I am just saying that flowers and books normally calm people down. That is why when people are stressed out they normally smell some flowers because of their scent can help release the stress in a person's body. If a person were to read a book it helps calm them down because they can get lost in the world of their book. To have 'instinctive' hatred toward items that can help calm you down seems a little weird.
Another example of hatredin this book I find awkward is between the groups in the book. How the Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas and Epsilons are always judging one another to say that their group is better, prettier or smarter than the other groups. It reminds me of high school a little bit because of how some people judge others by how they act, what sport they play or how they wear their clothes.
I hope that one day hatred between all types of peoples in objects can go away because it messes up our world.

Jessica, the reason they made it so certain people hate books and flowers is so that things can be easier for them. Like it says later in the chapter, they are made to hate nature and books so that they will work in the factories happily. Also, even as they learn to hate nature, they are taught to love outside sports, so they still go out in nature even though they hate it. They did this because they want the lower class people to do what they are meant to do so that everything in society will run smoothly and so that everything stays under control. In this way the lower class people still use transportation to attend outside sports while also working hard in factories. It is just a way for the higher classes to control the lower classes.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Christina. I believe that the reason they made certain people fear books and flowers is so that things would be easier for them; that they their work happily. In this way, the population would be content with what they have. The leaders of this dystopia believed that a eugenically preserved class system would maintain a stable society.
ReplyDeleteAlso, they are not just taught to hate nature, but also how to love outside sports. In this way, the people would still go out in nature (buy equipment and give money to their government) even though they hate it. The reason they brainwashed them into hating flowers and such was because before, the people loved nature so much that they would not go to work anymore. I believe that they did this as a way to get the lower class people to do what they are meant to do so that everything in society will run smoothly and under control. The lower class people still use transportation to attend outside sports while also working hard. This is just another way for the higher classes to control the lower classes. (This type of hidden power or control reminds me of the period when the Catholic Church sold indulgences to the people).
The reason the classes are taught to hate each other is so that there would order and people would not want to change classes. They brain wash the people while they are still young so that they would not know any better as they mature. They play conditioning tapes to dormitories of children at night in order to ensure their ‘happiness’. The drug, soma, prevents the population from feeling anything unpleasant.
I agree with the posts on this post so far. The reason that citizens are taught to hate nature is simply to control them. Brave New World has about the way governments work in its pages. The government forces people to hate nature in this book so that they will not be unhappy in their factories. This way, the government ensures that the citizens do what it wants them to, and the citizens themselves are happy. The drug soma is also another very controlling factor in Brave New World. Its simply another tool that the government uses to control its people. Basically, in Brave New World, the government is using happiness to control its people.
